Culture vultures will find plenty to savor at Vattanac Golf Resort. Although it is located a few lusty long irons from the center of Phnom Penh, golfers can enjoy a crash course in Cambodian history courtesy of the scale models of iconic temples that dot the Nick Faldo-designed East Course. Highlights include faithful recreations of Angkor Wat and Bayon – two of the most important structures at Angkor. Also present is a model of Preah Vihear, a spectacular Shiva temple built on the border of Cambodia and Thailand. While the history lesson is fascinating, the golf here is just as intriguing. Water comes into play on most holes, while Faldo compensates for the lack of elevation changes with imaginative mounding, landscaping and extensive bunkering. Other perks at the resort, which features two Faldo courses (the West is a private members-only track), include one of the largest clubhouses in Cambodia and plush locker rooms.
